WCU = Excellence in Teaching and Caring
At Western, you’ll gain the skills to empower students from infancy to early adolescence, making them better learners today, and better citizens tomorrow.

We Lead the State
Our outstanding advisors are one reason we lead the state in guiding teachers through the complex requirements for teachers.

Meet EMGE students and find out what they’re saying about Western

Elementary and Middle Grades Education (EMGE) Department
If you’re interested in nurturing and guiding the youngest minds of tomorrow, you’ll find a great home in the Department of Elementary and Middle Grades Education (EMGE). Our accomplished faculty members will guide you and give you the skills required to work with children from kindergarten age through early adolescence.

Fully Accredited Programs
Our fully accredited programs allow you to choose between elementary or middle grade age groups. Once that decision is made, you will choose from selected areas of focus for independent study. You also can extend your teaching license by completing a certificate in K-12 Reading.

Distance Learning Options
We offer elementary education coursework at selected regional community colleges. An online undergraduate middle grades program is planned to begin in the spring of 2009.

Support for Transfer Students
Are you a transfer student? We offer you help from the admissions office and the EMGE department to facilitate your transition to the university.

Graduate or Alternative Licensure Programs
If you’re changing careers or already have a degree, WCU’s graduate or alternative licensure programs may fit the bill. Whether you’re a teacher seeking advancement, a recent grad, or a working professional with an urge to make a difference, we have a program for you.

First-rate Resources & Opportunities
A foundation of the resources and opportunities available to you, our online Teacher Education Handbook will assist you as you progress through each stage of your preparation: admission; field experiences and internships; assembling a first-rate technology portfolio; and taking the pre-professional and subject tests.

Come join us and begin or further your teaching career. If you’d like more information or have specific questions, please contact us.
