English professor's book wins state poetry award
The North Carolina Literary and Historical Association awarded the 2007 Roanoke-Chowan Prize for Poetry to Catherine Carter, director of Western Carolina University’s English education program, for “The Memory of Gills,” her first published book of poetry.
Award winners were selected after a review of creative and imaginative quality, excellence of style, universality of appeal and relevance to North Carolina and the people of North Carolina.
Published by Louisiana State University Press, “The Memory of Gills” considers human people as a more connected part of the nonhuman world than we often think we are, said Carter (pictured above right).
“The title is derived from the biological premise that the development of each individual in the womb follows the same general course as the development of the species, so that at some stage we all had gills and tails,” said Carter.
